What COP28 in Dubai really means for us became apparent a few days later. The good news is Nations have agreed to deep emissions cuts by transitioning away from fossil fuels. But, the UAE's Head of COP admitted in an interview that they would continue to pump oil and gas - and invest in more output - as long as the demand is still there [Source **Guardian article under Sources below].
COP28 highlights the need for collective action if we are to achieve the critical climate goal to limit global warming to 1.5C Max. Here's what we can do:
Before COP28 we knew there is a big gap between the emissions cuts needed to limit global warming to 1.5C Max, and the actual reductions achieved by Nations. During COP28, the International Energy Authority announced that actions committed at COP28 closed only about 30% of the gap.
After COP28, the respected Climate Action Tracker confirmed that policies and actions agreed at COP28 had made no improvement to their modelling of global warming in 2100: “The current policies pathway ….remains at the same 2.7˚C that it was in Glasgow two years ago.” Nevertheless, some actions were agreed:
In addition to the headline text of transitioning away from fossil fuels, specific agreements include:
Several important agreements were reached, including:
I had the pleasure of co-hosting with Rotary a total of 12 livestream broadcasts which featured about 40 top speakers live from COP28. Thanks to Rotary, and our parent organization Saving Our Planet, and IAHV UK, this built on the success of our previous webinars at COP26 and COP27.
By mid-January 2024, highlights of our livestreams and the full broadcasts will be on N0CO2's YouTube page.
